The National Identification Authority (NIA) has denied some three allegations made by the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama.
Mr Mahama at a press briefing on Thursday following the Supreme Court ruling on the voters' register made some comments about the Ghana Card, which has been made one of the only two identification documents for the mass voters registration.
According to him, the Ghana card has not been rolled out in full and are being issued with no mechanism for verification adding that the NIA itself has admitted to duplication of thousands of these cards.
But, the NIA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Francis Palmdeti in a signed statement on Friday said the comments were false and accused the former President of misinforming citizens about the issuing of national identification cards.
He revealed that the Authority as of June 23, had registered 11,385,494 eligible Ghanaians, printed 11,172,261 cards and issued 10,854,829 cards to qualified Ghanaians.
“The target was to register 80% of the population aged 15 and above. A total number of Ghanaians aged 18 and above have been issued 10,576,120 Ghana Cards. By the end of the mop-up registration exercise, it is expected that 16.7 million eligible Ghanaians would have been captured on the National Identity Register and issued the Ghana Card,” he said.
Touching on the duplication of over 1000 cards, the NIA clarified that out of the cards printed so far, it is only in 525 instances that one card had been printed for an individual bearing different Personal Identification Numbers.
The situation, he said was caused by an error during a system update and the error has since been resolved.
