The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called on the Electoral Commission to intensify education on the schedule for the ongoing voter ID card registration exercise to prevent crowding.
According to the project Manager, Rhoda Osei Afful, although the huge turnout for the first day is praiseworthy it may be due to ignorance.
The numbers according to her may be due to low awareness of the duration of the exercise.
She advised the public to avoid trooping in large numbers to centres because “you have six days to do registration so it doesn’t have to be day 1 or 2”.
“We urge the Electoral Commission to step up public education but we also urge the general public be a little more responsive and watch out for the movement plan from the Electoral Commission,” she said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.
Meanwhile, she noted that some registration centres started off on a good note while others were challenged with technical hitches and other factors that delayed the process.
“Maybe the reason people are showing up in that kind of impressive manner is because they feel they might not get the opportunity to register,” she stated.
She called on the EC to act in collaboration with the appropriate bodies to uphold all safety protocols during the process.
