The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed the wife of the late Ekow Hayford as their 2020 Parliamentary Candidate for the Mfansteman Constituency.
Mrs Ophelia Hayford replaces her late husband who was murdered by some unknown assailants on Friday, October 9, while returning from a campaign tour.
This decision was taken by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) at a meeting held on Sunday, October 18, in line with Article 12 of the NPP Constitution.
According to NEC, the party had extensive consultations with all stakeholders including the constituents of Mfantseman before Mrs Ophelia Hayford was selected to be the parliamentary candidate.
"Mrs. Hayford had been a strong pillar in the political life of her late husband, and certainly, her selection as his replacement can only be a step in the right direction," a press statement signed by the NPP General Secretary, John Boadu read.
He added that the party has officially notified the Electoral Commission and requested for a 10-day extension of the nomination period in line with Section 13(4) of C.I. 127.
"Within this period, the party shall file Mrs Ophelia Hayford as its Parliamentary Candidate for the Constituency."
The NEC also urged the party's National Steering Committee to find a replacement for the Parliamentary Candidate for Yapei-Kusawgu, Mr Abu Kamara.
Mr Kamara along with two others lost their lives on Friday, October 16, in a fatal car accident.
