Members of the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly in the North East Region have called for a split of the Walewale constituency into three distinct parliamentary constituencies.
According to the Assembly members, splitting the current constituency into would make development planning easy and allocation of resources efficient.
At a press briefing in Walewale, the presiding officer of the Assembly, Sebiyam Ibrahim, said the total land size, coupled with the increased population has rendered activities of governance practically challenging.
He also added that it has created a political disillusion among members of most communities who felt they have been neglected and cut off from political participation.
Mr. Ibrahim, therefore, on behalf of the Assembly, appealed to President Akufo-Addo and the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Madam Jean Mensa to give the demand considerable attention.
"Splitting the current constituency into three will make development planning easy and also make grassroot participation in local government very effective. With the EC's recent registration, the figures have exceeded what a constituency should ideally have" he explained.
In expressing support for the appeal, Assembly members emphasised the vast nature of the constituency, noting that a split will go a long way to help in equal development across all parts of West Mamprusi.
With a current population of 121,117 and a total land size of 2610.44sqkm, the Walewale constituency is said to be the largest in the North East Region.
