The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has asked that its members and sympathizers limit campaign activities that involve mass gatherings in respect of Covid-19 protocols.
The directive follows the recent surge in coronavirus cases, attributed to a blatant disregard for precautionary measures by President Akufo-Addo.
The political party expressed concern in a press release dated Wednesday, November 11, about political activities like health walks, rallies and floats that breach safety protocols like social distancing and the wearing of face masks.
It advised that members, as well as regional and constituency campaign teams restrict these activities.
"In the wake of Ghana’s new coronavirus cases over the past two weeks and the rising concerns about a possible second wave of the virus in the country, the NPP admonishes its members and sympathizers including the various regional and constituency campaign teams to limit campaign activities that involve mass gatherings.
"As much as possible, health walks and mini rallies should be discouraged especially where it is becoming difficult or impossible to enforce the safety protocols.
"The lives of our countrymen and women can certainly not be jeopardized on the altar of political expediency, and so, observance of the protocols cannot be compromised regardless of the times we are in,” the statement read.
Signed by the party's General Secretary, John Boadu, the release reiterates President Akufo-Addo's calls for other political leaders to adhere to Covid-19 preventive measures even as the country nears the December 2020 general elections.
"...it is also our expectation that we shall all strive to work at protecting and consolidating the gains we have made in the Covid-19 fight by strictly observing the safety protocols," it further stated.
The press release was posted on the NPP's official website.
