Nana Oduro Sarfo has resigned as Berekum Chelsea Chief Executive Officer (CEO) following criticisms for defending the terrible state of the Golden City Park.
Oduro Sarfo said in a statement that his reason for resigning is personal, having worked with the club since 2011.
"I joined this wonderful club in 2011 and was very instrumental in the success of the club in the CAF campaign, 2013, I was there for another journey which we were not successful due to financial constrain.
We have sojourned on to this day, which we have to painfully part company, my reasons are personal. I will like to thank the president of the club, Board of Directors, Management Members, Players, Technical Team as well as our wonderful supporters for their support while I was with this Club," a part of his statement read.
The park hosted Berekum Chelsea’s Ghana Premier League matchday 2 encounter against Asante Kotoko which ended 1-1.
Although the match was filled with drama, the terrible pitch dominated post-match discussions.
However, Oduro Sarfo, who doubles as an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), rudely defended the pitch in a radio interview.
“Some of the players even play on grassless pitches so what are you talking about? Nobody has asked you to call me.
"I’m watching a Nigerian movie and that is more precious to me at this point. We have finished playing the game and I don’t care about anything anymore. If you don’t understand go and ‘collect’ the three points from us,” he told Accra-based Angel FM.
Oduro Sarfo’s comments drew criticism from football-loving Ghanaians, forcing his club to release a statement distancing itself.
He has reacted to the club’s decision by stepping down.
