The Minority in Parliament has hinted it will head to the Supreme Court to seek interpretation on whether Fomena MP, Andrew Amoako Asiamah can continue holding onto his position as Second Deputy Speaker.
This follows a declaration by Speaker Alban Bagbin that Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu is Majority Leader.
This was after the Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah decided to align with the NPP side of the House.
The constitution is categorical that 1st and 2nd Deputy Speakers of the house should not be from the same party.
The NPP's Bekwai legislator Joseph Osei-Owusu is the 1st Deputy Speaker for the 8th Parliament and the Fomena MP occupies the second deputy speakership seat.
Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak says with the declaration that NPP plus independent constitute majority, the Supreme Court has to interpret whether an MP from the 1st Deputy’s parliamentary group can be 2nd Deputy.
“The only way you can have them to be a majority of 138 is when you add the Independent which in this case the Speaker has added so if they accept that the Speaker has added the independent to their number, therefore, give them the majority, then they can’t have two of the deputy speakers from the same group.”
