The Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG) has sworn into office its 8th Governing Council headed by the Chief Executive Officer of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Tawiah Ben-Ahmed.
The 2020/2022 Investiture of the CIIG which was on the theme “Defend and Grow CIIG,” saw a 10-member Council inaugurated to direct the activities of the institute for the next two years.
Ben-Ahmed who used to be the Vice President of the CIIG, succeeds Bishop Asante Marfo-Ahenkorah.
He has outlined several initiatives including seeing to the passage of the CIIG Charter which is currently before the Ministry of Education.
“A Committee would be set to review and ensure its passage into law. Our priority is to move from being an insurance professional association to a professional body backed by law,” he said.
Unethical insurance practices
Outgoing Board Chair of the National Insurance Commission, Ray Ankrah, admonished the CIIG to help deal with the negative perception of insurance.
According to him, the industry still suffers an “image problem.”
“The insurance sector could play a critical role for the development of the country by providing long term finance for government and businesses and I therefore entreat all key players to remain professional in their conduct. Professionalism, simply put, is how you conduct yourself at work to represent both yourself and the association you belong to in an efficacious manner,” he said.
Meanwhile, the outgone President of the CIIG, Bishop Asante Marfo-Ahenkorah has urged the new governing council to move forward with fortitude.
On his part, the National Insurance Commission, represented by its Deputy Commissioner, Michael Kofi Andoh urged the CIIG to collaborate with the Ghana Insurance College to train and develop the requisite human resources needed to transform the insurance industry and to enable it to play its expected role in the development of the country.
