The Interim Finance Minister, Osei Kyei Mensa Bonsu has disclosed that processes are underway to actualise the Cape Coast Airport it promised ahead of the 2020 elections.
Delivering the 2021 Budget statement on Friday, he stated that the feasibility studies for the development of an airport in Cape Coast in the Central Region have commenced.
“Mr Speaker, as part of government policy to ensure that all regional capitals have at least an aerodrome to improve connectivity and boost tourism, feasibility studies for the development of an airport in Cape Coast has commenced,” he stated.
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister also touted the achievement the Akufo-Addo government has chalked in the aviation sector.
According to him, government over the years has embarked on massive infrastructural developments to facelift various existing airports to meet international standards.
He cited the expansion of both Kumasi and Tamale airports adding that in 2021, both projects will be completed and opened to the general public.
Mr Kyei Mensah Bonsu also hinted that government has identified some towns including Apowa-Mpohor, Yendi, Mole, Navrongo, Paga and Kete Krachi for the construction of aerodromes through Public Private Partnerships (PPP).
In 2020, government revealed that it has secured a 600-acre land and identified source of funding for the Cape Coast Airport.
The Aviation Minister together with officials of the Ghana Airport Company inspected the 600-acre land situated at Ankaful for the construction of the project.
The NPP during its manifesto launch in Cape Coast promised to build an Airport and a harbour for the people.
The news brought a cocktail of reactions from residents. While some thought it was an election gimmick, others were of the considered view it was the beginning of the rise of Cape Coast.
But the then Sector Minister, Kofi Adda explained a lot of work has been done ever since the promise was made by government and the NPP administration was keen on fulfilling it.
