The Ghana Police Service has provided an update on security measures rolled out to curtail the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic while the nation joined the world to mark day one of Easter festivities.
Prior to the festive season, the police announced the enforcement of some guidelines which included a ban public gatherings among others.
According to the service, “the hosting of any carnival, festival, beach gathering, street dances, procession, parades and such events will be illegal,"
Updating the public on Friday's operation, Director of Public Affairs for the service, Supt Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman said, "there was heavy police deployment at the beaches in Accra on Good Friday as police enforce Covid-19 Protocols on beach gathering."
She also noted that "the police deployment covered all beaches including Kokrobitey, La Pleasure beach, Titanic, Bojo, Glefe, Osikan, Sakumomno, Chorkor, Laboma, among others to ensure that merry makers do not throng the beaches in defiance of the executive orders."
At Weija for instance, deployment of Police personnel began at exactly 5am to the various Beach Resorts from Aplaku to Langma.
Prior to the deployment letters were dispatched to the Managements of the Resorts to officially alert them of the exercise by the security agencies.
"So far almost all the Resorts are complying with the exercise which informed some of them to entirely lock the gates to the beach to prevent patronage by people," she said.
"Policemen are on patrols to ward off holiday makers at the various beaches. There are standby men from FPU at Bojo Beach, Mobile Patrols on going as well as foot patrols at the beaches is significant. As of now, there is positive signs of compliance and the area is relatively calm," she added.
Similarly, the police embarked on the Covid-19 enforcement foot patrol exercise within Amasaman District, some places visited include Amasaman Lorry station, Amasaman market square, Amasaman Hospital area, Obeyeyie, Fise, Abeahenese among others.
