The Ghana Standards Authority has set standards to regulate buying and selling of eggs.
This means that the pricing of eggs and the kind of eggs sold on the market will be guided by the standards.
The standard is to ensure that there are no sub-standard eggs on the market as well as ensuring value for money for buyers.
Explaining to some industry players the expectations of the Ghana Standards Authority, Scientific Officer at the Ghana Standards Authority, Samuel Kwatia said “ we want to make sure that the layers [birds] used in laying the eggs are healthy. Eggs shall be of the original taste from the bird in particular. The size and weight of the eggs should be duly stated on the package”.
President of the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association, Michael Nyarko-Ampem, welcomed the move but however said it is not an immediate solution to egg glut.
“It is very good for the industry, however, members have to adjust to it. We’re slow to change. The standards may not necessarily solve the problem of egg glut. Egg glut will be solved if people get to understand the importance of egg and the other side will be to look at processing the egg in the long term,” he said.
Chief of Party for the Ghana Poultry Project, Carienne de Boer disclosed that her outfit is looking forward to building the capacity of players in the poultry value chain.
“Our role is to build capacity of the value chain actors and educate them on what they want, as well as some advocacy programme for government to hear them,” she stated.
