The lawyer for the Rastafarian students, who were denied admission at Achimota School, has urged Ghanaians to applaud the High Court Judge who presided over the case.

According to Ras Tetteh Wayo, Justice Gifty Agyei Addo has cemented the protection of fundamental human rights in the country after ordering the school to readmit the two young boys it previously denied to take in.

Speaking to the media, he explained that the court has shown that human rights in the country do not exist just in law books, but they need to be observed.

“What her ladyship has done today is to make sure that human rights are respected, protected and fulfilled. What makes it beautiful is that she read some persuasive judgement and rulings from other jurisdictions like Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

"Now Ghana has also stamped its authority in fulfilling human rights. She has really cemented the protection of fundamental human rights in this country, just by her ruling today," Mr Wayo said.

His comment comes barely a few hours after an Accra High Court ordered Achimota School to admit two Rastafarian students it denied admission over their refusal to cut their dreadlocks.

The Human Rights Division of the High Court presided over by Justice Gifty Agyei Addo ruled that the rules in question cannot limit the fundamental human rights of two students.

Tyron Iras Marhguy and Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea sued the school’s Board of Governors, the Minister of Education, Ghana Education Service and the Attorney General to enforce their fundamental Human Rights.

Mr Wayo said that this ruling can also help other commonwealth countries when faced with similar human rights issues.

“If the media is talking about it, I would like you to spend one minute to look at the extent and the excess of what she has done and propagate it.”

After the judgment, Tyrone Marhguy welcomed the court's decision stating that he was happy to have his academic dream back on track.
