Convener of the #FixtheCountry movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has vowed to continue fighting for a better Ghana, despite being prosecuted for Treason Felony.

According to him, his recent arrest has left him even more determined to stand against the wrongs in society.

The activist, who was arrested for threatening a coup on social media, promised #FixTheCountry followers of an impending victory.

In a live YouTube address on Monday, he stated that “I’ve emerged from jail twice certain that we’re on the right path.”

“We must not lose sight of the fact that attempts to militarise our words and our voices and those who are committed to breaking our fronts through violence and character assassination will not stop.

“We are on the precipice of victory against the bleak and defeated leadership,” he said.

Mr Barker-Vormawor, while recounting how he was allegedly manhandled by security officials during his detention, urged the youth to refrain from giving up their resolve to hold leadership accountable.

He acknowledged that although some may be afraid of persecution, they must endeavour not to lose their enthusiasm.

“I know that for some people, my arrest and subsequent unlawful detention have either broken your spirit or maybe you’ve withdrawn your enthusiasm…some of you have become more afraid, you have started to wonder if you can win against people who are not shy to be violent and to murder.

“I have come out to find some of you now more afraid than when you started. I urge you not to lose that fear but to embrace it. Perseverance in the course of justice, I assure you, seduces even the most stubborn members of our community. So, do not lose faith,” he admonished.

Background

On February 10, Mr Barker-Vormawor took to social media to threaten a coup following pictures emerging from the Majority Leader’s 65th birthday bash showing an ‘E-levy’-designed cake.

He posted, “If this E-Levy passes after this cake bullshit, I will do the coup myself. Useless Army!”

In a subsequent post, he explained the context in which he used the word coup.

He was arrested on February 11 at the Kotoka International Airport upon arriving from the United Kingdom.

He was subsequently granted a ¢2 million bail by the Tema High Court after being charged with a Treason Felony.
