Ghana’s population is expected to surpass 50 million people by 2050, according to a research conducted by accounting and auditing firm, PwC, for UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce.
However, by 2025, the population of the country will hit 34.41 million and 37.83 million in 2030.
The report also said the current urban/ rural split in Ghana which is 54% in urban areas and 46% in rural areas is likely to expand in favour of urban areas in the next three decades.
Hence in 2050, it is projected that 73.2% (36m) of the total population would be living in urban areas.
“The share of Ghana’s population living in urban areas is forecasted to increase. In 2050, 73% of the total population is expected to live in urban areas. Ghana population is gradually ageing, and the aged population is expected to make up around 6% of the total population, up from 3% in 2015”, the report further said
Again, it pointed out that Ghana’s population is gradually ageing, and while the share of working class adults is expected to be relatively stable, the share of the aged population (60+) is expected to increase.
By 2025, children will constitute 45.9% of the population, whilst the working class of the population is estimated at 50.5%. For the aged, they will make up of 3.6% of the population.
