Former President John Mahama says Ghana’s judiciary has been heavily tainted for denying the people of Assin North a representation in Parliament.

According to the NDC flagbearer hopeful, the country’s justice system works for a few people in the country.

Addressing delegates of the Asin North Constituency in the Central Region, Mr. Mahama questioned why the Supreme Court has injuncted Mr. Gyakye Quayson for such a long time and refused to determine the case to ensure the people of the Assin North are represented in Parliament.

“In Ghana, our motto is freedom and justice. It means that of all the values that we hold dear, justice is one of them. Unfortunately sometimes the justice system does not work for everybody.

“The justice system has not worked for the people of Assin North and it hasn’t worked for Honourable Joe Quayeson,” he said during his tour of the Central Region on Thursday.

According to him, “It is a blight on our system of justice that for such a long time, the Assin North people have been deprived of their MP representing them appropriately in Parliament.”

“It is a blight on our justice system that the writ which is supposed to remove an injunction on him [Gyakye Quayson] from carrying out his functions as an MP has been pending before the court for one year now,” he added.

He, therefore, entreated "whoever is responsible" to take action as soon as possible to ensure that the people of Assin North have representation in Parliament.

On his part, the embattled Assin North MP, Joe Quayson was also not happy about the delay in determining the case.

“To be honest with you, it is the constituents that are missing out a lot. I am a representative – the people have elected me to represent them. If you say you would not allow the people's choice to perform his duties that means you are depriving the people of Assin North of representation and that is not right,” he said.
