Several Members of Parliament have expressed their concerns and called for the implementation of legislation to govern the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the country.
AI tools are software applications that utilise algorithms based on artificial intelligence to perform specific tasks and address various challenges.
These tools have wide-ranging applications in industries such as healthcare, finance, marketing, and education. They contribute to task automation, data analysis, and improved decision-making capabilities.
During parliamentary discussions on Wednesday, June 8, many legislators highlighted the significant benefits of AI technologies while emphasizing the importance of regulation to ensure responsible and aligned usage.
MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, stated, "If we don't take action now, the future will be bleak for our country. Perhaps, Mr. Speaker, we should consider establishing an Artificial Intelligence Council."

MP for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, further emphasized the need for a comprehensive framework to address potential concerns surrounding AI.
He stated, "those who have been involved in AI development are starting to worry about its potential. It is the right time for us to consider what kind of legal or regulatory architecture can mitigate the risks associated with AI."

The discussions in Parliament reflect a growing recognition among MPs of the necessity to proactively address the challenges and potential dangers posed by AI.
By implementing appropriate legislation and regulations, the aim is to harness the benefits of AI while safeguarding against any detrimental impacts.
