Mr Paul Collins Appiah-Ofori, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Assikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, could face expulsion from the party for his “embarrassing” behaviour.The party’s General Secretary, Nana Ohene-Ntow, was reacting to allegations of bribery levelled by Mr Appiah-Ofori against NPP MPs in the last Parliament. The Assikuma-Odoben-Brakwa MP alleged his colleagues received $5,000 inducement each for approving the controversial Vodafone-GT deal, an allegation the MPs deny.Nana Ohene Ntow said Mr Appiah-Ofori had gained notoriety for consistently seeking to dent the image of the party.That behaviour, he regretted, leaves the party with no other option but to take action against him.“My sense is that the man (Appiah-Ofori) is just bent on tarnishing the image of the party… his behaviour clearly to embarrasses the party,” Ohene-Ntow told Joy FM's Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah.He said since the conduct of Mr Appiah-Ofori was not in tandem with the tenets of the NPP, sanctioning him, albeit painfully, was the only way to maintain party discipline.He emphasised that it is likely the anti-corruption crusader, Appiah-Ofori, could be suspended or expelled from the party depending on the outcome of a meeting due to be held by Friday, this week.The General Secretary reminded Appiah-Ofori that he was in Parliament on the ticket of the NPP and therefore could not be dragging the same into the mud. The MP must “recognize that his behaviour has some consequences on the party,” he said.He explained that the MP had on previous occasions made similar unfounded allegations against the party or some of its members but apologised subsequently.Nana Ohene-Ntow also accused Mr Appiah-Ofori of “standing against cohesion and cooperation” within the party.He was worried that people, especially the NDC might misconstrue the party’s action as gagging the MP.Even though two of the MPs accused of taking money in lieu of their support for the Vodafone deal have threatened to take legal action against him, the MP for Assikuma-Odoben-Brakwa seems adamant and told Joy FM’s Israel Laryea that the act was undaunted.Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com
