Daniel Acquah, Deputy Commissioner of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, has indicated that more foreign airlines are eyeing Ghana’s airspace to operate commercial services.
However, he said, most of these airlines do not meet the criteria necessary to attain the approval of the authority.
He was speaking at an Aviation Safety Investigation Day celebration organised by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau. The day celebration brought stakeholders together to deliberate on ways to improve safety in the aviation industry.
In an interview, the Deputy Commissioner of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority said “We have a lot more knocking on our doors to establish airlines but the reality is that it is very expensive or capital intensive to establish an airline. According to the civil aviation regulation or directive, you need a certain caliber of personnel, so we have all that criteria in our regulations”.
“So, a lot knock on our doors, but when they come and you spell out the rudiments of the game, they just fizzle out”, he explained
Mr. Acquah also reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring safety in the aviation industry and fostering innovation.
The Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, Akwasi Prempeh, also called for the collaboration of stakeholders in the aviation industry to safeguard lives and protect the country’s human resources.
The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority also indicated that government has plans to develop a policy to assist aircraft accident victims.
The forum was held under the theme “Working together for an innovative and sustainable global aviation”.
