The Ghana Armwrestling Federation held a press briefing as Ghana prepare to host the World Armwrestling Championship in August 2024 after winning hosting rights.
The federation after an impressive bid presentation at the World Congress in Almaty, Kazakhstan will host the 45th World Armwrestling Championship in August 2024.
This will be the first time Ghana is hosting the championship after facing fierce opposition from the North African side, Egypt.
Speaking at the press conference, Charles Osei Asibey, who also doubles as the President for the Armwrestling Federation of Africa, and President of Ghana Armwrestling Federation revealed reasons why Ghana decided to bid for the hosting right of the world championship.
"All these (Athletes) here may never have a world championship experience. The reason is simple, it is expensive to travel outside Africa or Ghana. Unfortunately, we do not get the kind of support we need to be able to send these young ones outside to go and make the country proud. So the key reason for which I decided with my team to fight and bring the world championship to Ghana is also to give experience and exposure to these young ones to at least in their lifetime participate in a world Championship. Once Ghana is hosting, the guarantee of all these athletes playing at the world championship is high"
He also added that the only way to develop the armwrestling sport is to host a championship.
"And for us, we have hosted two Africa Championships and all two championships are deemed to be the best ever organised on the continent so we felt that we've gone past the African Championship it is time for us to host the world."
The World Armwrestling Championship is a premier global event in the sports world, attracting top athletes annually. The convergence of elite Pullers competing for supremacy draws over 2,000 athletes, coaches, referees, and spectators.
This annual festival is endorsed and supervised by the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF).
