The acceptance speech delivered by Ghanaian artiste Black Sherif while receiving the Best International Flow award at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards has generated conversations.
The 'Soja' hit maker during his speech mentioned he had always yearned to win the award and thanked the people who contributed to making the dream come true.
“I saw this in my sleep every night. I started making music four years ago in a small city in Ghana called Konongo Zongo and there was no way nobody was going to convince me that I wouldn’t be here, that my music wasn’t going global. Thank you so much BET, thank you to God, thank you to my mum, thank you to my dad, and thank you to my team," he said.
Black Sherif first earned a nomination in the Best International Flow of the BET Hiphop category in 2022.
Describing the Diasporans at the awards ceremony as "kings and queens back home", he urged them to visit Ghana.
“I love you guys so much and to each and every one of you here, Remember you are kings and queens back home, welcome back home,” Black Sherif added.
He beat off competition from Ninho (France), Sampa The Great (Zambia), AKA (South Africa), Central Cee (UK), Gazo (France), J Hus (UK), K.O (South Africa), Major RD (Brazil), and Tasha & Tracie (Brazil).
This year's event, which was pre-recorded at Cobb Energy Center in Atlanta, GA, on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, paid homage to 50 years of Hip Hop.
In the meantime, some people have expressed their admiration for Black Sherif's acceptance speech. While some have commended him for always projecting his hometown Konongo to the world, others have also appreciated his call on foreigners to visit the country, a similar statement made by Sarkodie when he won the same award a few years ago.
