Ghanaian musician, Mohammed Ismail Sherif, better known as Black Sherif, has shared some of his fondest school memories.
In a viral interview, after he had won the Best International Flow award at the just-ended BET Hip Hop Awards 2023, he recounted some of his basic school memories, particularly the use of corporal punishment – caning.
While there are ongoing efforts to discourage the use of corporal punishment in Ghanaian schools, it still remains the go-to choice for teachers that want to discipline their pupils.
Speaking on the issue, Blacko said even though he was a good kid at school, he still got the occasional punishment.
His favourite teacher, Madam Isabella, on the other hand, he said, was the nicest.
Reacting to the video, Isabella Mpaa who taught Black Sherif in Primary 2 at Pinamang Educational Complex in Konongo confirmed how calm and respectful the rapper was.
According to her, while teachers on the continent are notorious for using corporal punishment, she argues that it is solely to instill discipline.

“Black sherif was one my pupils, he was calm and respectful. On African teachers like beatings, l can say it’s not deliberate but just to train our children well, and I must confess African teachers are the best,” she said.
Black Sherif gained popularity in 2021 with his song “ first sermon “ which was released in May. Since then he has risen to become one of the most notable musicians on the continent.
