Ghanaian event executive, Whitney Boakye-Mensah, has advised women in the creative industry to learn how to project each other.
According to her, a lot of women in the creative industry have not made great strides because they don’t support each other.
Speaking to Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z on Joy FM, she urged the women come together and fight a common cause.
“Let the other gender fight us. Don’t let us fight each other,” she said.
She remonstrated how difficult it is for women in the arts to give other women opportunities.
“It’s sad that as women, we cannot even be each other’s champions. One person enters into that open door and it will take a thousand years for 10 other women to enter into that room again.
Listen if we are each other’s champions, each other’s keepers, each other’s friends, we will be the most powerful I this industry because it seems the creative industry is a man’s world as everything else. There are more woman creatives than there are men,” she added.
Whitney was also appalled by the fact that “even in the creative space half of the non essential beef and fights that happen on social media is led by women.”
She said while the men in the industry use their 'beefs' for positive promotions, the women do so to sully each other’s image.
“How many times do you even see guys beef over very non essential things. A lot of the time guys have figured out. All their 'beefs' are geared towards music promotion , some movie is coming out and then they create that buzz around it. But for us what do we do? Drug each other down, call each other names , say nasty things about each other , when we can actually use it to project each other,” she noted.
Whitney was among female creatives who appeared on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z on Saturday, February 10, 2024, to discuss ways to empower women in showbiz.
Other women on the show were comedian Jacinta Ocansey, actress Akofa Edjeani and musician Mimi Andani.
Showbiz A-Z airs on Joy 99.7 FM on Saturdays from 2pm to 6pm.
