The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a disclaimer advising clients to avoid making payments to individuals who claim to represent the power distribution company.
In a statement on February 22, the ECG cautioned about recent activities of fraudsters who demand payments for services through phone calls.
The statement encouraged users to make purchases through the ECG power mobile app or the short code *226#.
“The attention of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been drawn to activities of fraudsters who call ECG customers in the name of ECG to make ECG services to certain mobile money accounts to access
“Customers should please note that ECG does not demand payments for services through phone calls. Customers are strongly advised to personally Initiate transactions through ECG POWER (Mobile App or shortcodes *226#) for all payments,” portions of the disclaimer said.

On February 20, the company said this caution was necessitated by increasing complaints from customers on receiving calls from strange numbers requesting they deposit money into ECG bank or Mobile Money accounts for services.
Volta Regional General Manager of ECG, Ms. Christina Jatoe-Kaleo explained that her outfit does not operate a Mobile Money account and entreated customers not to give audience to people who would ask them to send money to ECG mobile money account to access ECG services.
