Some owners of the stalls which were set ablaze by officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) yesterday say they will defy the authorities’ directive not to return there.
Several stalls and shacks along the Spintex road close to the Accra Mall were pulled down by authorities of the AMA deep in the night Thursday.
The action by the municipal authorities forms part of efforts to beautify the capital ahead of US President Barack Obama’s visit.
Although they concede they were given notices to vacate the area, the hawkers say the action by the AMA authorities took them by surprise.
Joy FM’s Araba Koomson visited the area earlier Friday and reported that very few of the hawkers whose stalls were burnt down returned to their trading activities.
Some of the traders who had returned to their stalls and makeshift structures said they were reportedly down in tears as they saw the burning embers of what had been their business centres.
