The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called for a review of the speed limit on the Accra-Tema motorway.
The Bureau believes that revising the speed limit would help reduce the number of accidents recorded on the motorway in recent times.
According to the Bureau, enforcing a lower speed limit for motorists could lead to a significant decrease in road accidents, thereby saving lives.
This recommendation is in response to the numerous accidents on the motorway, many of which have resulted in fatalities.
In an interview with Citi FM on Monday, July 29, the Executive Secretary of the Bureau of Public Safety, Nana Yaw Akwada, stressed the importance of reassessing the speed limits.
He pointed out that settlements have been built close to the motorway, increasing the risk of accidents and necessitating a review of current speed regulations.
Mr Akwada emphasised that the proximity of these settlements to the motorway has changed the dynamics of traffic safety.
Therefore, adjusting speed limits would be a prudent measure to ensure the safety of both motorists and residents.
The Bureau of Public Safety is urging the authorities to take immediate action to address this issue, stressing that proactive measures are needed to prevent further loss of lives on the Accra-Tema motorway.
“With such a highway, it just makes sense that we have allowed settlements to go this close on an express route, we have to review road conditions, allowable speed, and types of vehicles that can even drive there, and all that. It’s just civil to do that,” he said.
