The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has urged Parliament to pass the Conduct of Public Officers’ Bill.
According to the Executive Secretary of the Coalition, Beauty Emefa Narteh, the delay in passing the bill has created room for corruption and its related activities to flourish.
Speaking to JoyNews on August 21, she explained that the bill, if passed, will minimise corrupt practices among public officeholders.
Madam Narteh was optimistic that political parties would include measures to mitigate these corrupt practices in their manifestoes and policies.
Additionally, the Executive Director of the Ghana Integrative Initiative, Mary Addah, said she was not surprised that public office holders especially politically exposed individuals were reluctant to establish mechanisms that could impose restrictions on them.
“Any time you ask about the bill they say it’s either with the A-G or with cabinet and it’s interesting. Perhaps, this question should be asked of the president. The President is the number one gentleman supposed to be superintending over the promoting of governance in our country,” she said.
She said some public officials insist that disclosing their personal assets is culturally unacceptable as family relations may make undue demands.
The Conduct of Public Officers Bill if passed will ensure transparency, accountability, and integrity among public officials.
