Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed unwavering confidence in the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana in conducting a credible election.

According to him, he believes the body is fully capable of conducting free and fair elections in the upcoming December polls.

Speaking after a productive meeting with the EC on Tuesday, October 8, Mr Jonathan praised the passion and commitment demonstrated by the Commission towards ensuring successful elections.

Mr Johathan represented the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) – a body made up of former heads of government.

He was accompanied by former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo for a pre-election assessment of Ghana’s Electoral Commission.

“We had a robust discussion with the EC and we’ve seen the passion they have, the commitment they have, for conducting successful elections, and what they have done so far, it is key.

“We had interactions with a number of people before coming here, and all the issues they raised which we put across to her [EC Chair] she’s explained perfectly. And we have no iota of doubt about the competence and the willingness for the Commission to do what is right, come the December Elections,” he said.

He went on to congratulate Ghana for its high rating in democratic practices across Africa, despite existing challenges.

“We believe that in the next election, Ghana will further solidify its position on the democratic ladder,” he added.

His remarks come as Ghana prepares for its December elections, with various stakeholders expressing hopes for a peaceful and transparent electoral process.

In response, the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa said the endorsement from the WAEF representatives should serve as assurance to Ghanaians.
