The various presidential candidates and their political parties contesting in this year’s election have gathered in Accra to sign a peace pact ahead of next week’s election.
Speaking at the event, the organizer of the elections, the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), pledged to conduct the process in a democratic manner.
The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, pledged on behalf of the Commission to ensure peace throughout the electoral process.
“On behalf of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, I pledge that my team and I will continue to conduct our activities in a manner that will ensure peace before, during, and long after the 2024 elections,” she said at the event.
She added, “The processes we will employ on election day and in the days that follow are robust, transparent, and inclusive.”
She also urged the various candidates to accept the results that the Commission will announce after the polls in good faith.
The peace pact is intended to bind leaders of the various political parties in the race to act in ways that will promote peace in the country and also to accept the election results without resorting to actions that could jeopardize the country’s democracy.
