In a regular parliamentary sitting on Monday, December 16, the Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer addressed concerns about his participation in parliamentary proceedings following his loss in the recent parliamentary elections.
Mr Mercer, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the total valid votes, while Blay Nyameke Armah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured 14,558 votes, corresponding to 56.40%.
Despite the shocking outcome, Mercer was resolute in affirming his dedication to serving his constituents and contributing to the work of the Eighth Parliament until its tenure ended.
Speaking to the media, Mr Mercer dismissed suggestions that defeated MPs might disengage from parliamentary activities.
“I lost the election for the Ninth Parliament, but I remain a member of the Eighth Parliament representing the good people of Sekondi, and I am here to do my job,” he said.
He also stressed his commitment to the legislative process, noting that his presence “throws into question” any notion that losing candidates are less interested in parliamentary matters. He reiterated his intent to participate fully in deliberations, including those on key bills tabled for the current session.
“Leadership will confer, and as a regular member of Parliament, I’ll ensure that I actively participate in deliberations to serve the people of Ghana,” he added.
