The Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Berenice Owen-Jones has hailed donors at the 2024 Melbourne Cup Charity Ball for their incredible gestures that culminated in raising a splendid GHS 233,181.11.
Speaking during the presentation of the above-quoted amount to the Ghanaian Non-Governmental Organization BASICS International, Berenice Owen-Jones commended the donors for contributing towards the upliftment of less-privileged Ghanaian societies.
She expressed her excitement with the charity projects, stating that it fills her with great joy and excitement to be part of such laudable and life-changing projects.
“Each year, the Social Club at the Australian High Commission, supported by a small group of Australian and New Zealand expatriates, works hard to bring this event to life. We are deeply thankful for the diplomatic and business communities who support the charity ball through their attendance and the donation of prizes. Being able to give back to the local community in Accra is a privilege.”
Founder of BASICS International, Ms. Patricia Wilkins, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating the money will enable her organization to undertake various projects to support the less-privileged.
She explained that the money will be channeled into providing opportunities for the youth by contributing to their growth and transformation.
“This generosity from the community brings us closer to realizing our vision for BASICS International’s Camp Aklowah. This initiative will serve as a transformative space for children in Ghana, where they can grow, learn, and experience a safe and enriching environment away from their daily challenges. The impact of this event is profound, as it directly supports our mission to break cycles of poverty and provide new opportunities for our youth.”
The event featured special Melbourne Cup-themed cocktails on arrival, crab and snail races, an auction, a raffle, and trivia games with amazing prizes donated by generous sponsors, including luxurious hotel stays, vouchers for international flights, and an 85-inch television. Throughout the evening, guests also participated in the popular Fashions on the Field parade and the musical chairs race.
The amount will support the activities of BASICS International, a Ghanaian non-profit organization that supports the education, healthcare, and development of essential life skills for vulnerable children and families in Chokor.
