The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the South Tongu district of the Volta Region has organised a health walk aimed at promoting environmental awareness and highlighting the agency's objectives.
The event, held under the theme "Safeguarding Ghana's Environment Since 1974," brought together local residents, students, and stakeholders from the district.
Speaking to the participants, Mr Derick Ashia Logo, the EPA's Area Director for South Tongu, underscored the importance of environmental protection and the need for collective action to tackle the environmental challenges facing the district.

"The EPA is committed to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development. We believe that safeguarding the environment is a collective responsibility, and we need the support of all stakeholders to achieve our goals," Mr Logo said.
He outlined the EPA's key objectives, which focus on environmental protection, pollution control, environmental planning, licensing and permitting, waste management, climate change mitigation, environmental education and awareness, as well as fostering collaboration and partnerships.
Mr Logo further stated that the EPA is determined to work with all relevant stakeholders to meet these objectives and promote environmental sustainability across their various operational areas.

The South Tongu district faces numerous environmental challenges, including pollution, deforestation, and the impacts of climate change.
Due to its proximity to the Volta River, the district is particularly vulnerable to water pollution, while the growing demand for land for agricultural and urban development has led to significant deforestation.
Mr Logo stressed that the EPA remains committed to addressing these issues and promoting sustainable practices within the district.

Participants carried placards and banners with messages promoting environmental awareness and conservation.
He also expressed his gratitude to the local stakeholders for their support and emphasised the importance of continued collaboration to advance environmental protection and sustainable development in the area.

The health walk forms part of the country's efforts to mitigate the negative impact of climate change in Ghana.
Recently, Joy News held a dialogue on clean air and election 2024 where experts, diplomats, and political actors in the country discussed how to combat the menace and make the environment a better place for all.
