Residents of Gakli in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region have implored President John Mahama to redeem the promises he made to them during his campaign tour of the area in 2024.
Community leaders listed road construction, provision of potable water, a health facility and a connection to the national grid among others as some of the promises which convinced them to overwhelmingly endorse President Mahama and the NDC.
Speaking to Myjoyonline.com on the sideline of a victory party for NDC fateful in Gakli, the residents shared their optimism of the Mahama government improving the economy and enhance their livelihoods as they heavily survive on trading activities.
The Gakli community situated on the Ghana-Togo border has been home to migrants from the West African sub-region, mostly those who believe in Islam. It is also hosts people of Aflao Duta.

It is faced with the challenges of poor road network, lack of potable water, and limited power supply, as acquiring meters has become a daunting task for residents.
Residents felt neglected by the Akufo-Addo government, and made a decision to endorse John Dramani Mahama of the NDC.
According to them, they faced intimidation and restrictions during the 2024 limited voter registration exercise, from agents of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Nonetheless, the victory of the NDC in the December 7, 2024, general elections give them renewed hope of development and improved livelihoods.

The NDC Gakli Electoral Area Coordinator, Yusifu Isaka was elated with the outcome of the elections which also gave NDC a majority representation in parliament.
He appreciated the electorates for giving the NDC over 97% at all three polling stations in his jurisdiction and shared optimism of the community witnessing the needed infrastructure development within the next four years.

“Our major problems are lack of access to potable water, getting connected to the national electricity grid, acquiring meters and bad access roads.
“The bad road has made it difficult for us to transport the sick, especially pregnant women from Gakli to the hospital in Aflao. We pray the Lord gives John Mahama the strength to honour all the promises he made to us”, he said.

Addressing the party fateful in Gakli, the Ketu South NDC Member of Parliament, Dzifa Abla Gomashie stressed that her party would fulfill all promises made to Gakli.
“I don’t have much to say. I will remind John Mahama of the promises he made to Gakli because I want us to fulfill all the promises so that we will see development and progress.
It was a day of merry-making, a period the residents identified as a new dawn for their deprived community which is witnessing a sharp increase in population.
