The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has expressed confidence in the Energy Minister-designate, John Abdulai Jinapor, to deliver when appointed Minister of the Energy sector.
According to him, even though the Energy Minister-designate has yet to assume office, pending approval by the Parliamentary vetting committee, he has all the qualifications to occupy the position, given his past experience in the sector.
His remarks came after the Energy Minister-designate, Mr. Jinapor addressed critical issues before the vetting committee yesterday, including private sector participation in the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the rising energy sector debt.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday, January 14, Mr. Amoasi mentioned that the debt in the sector is something that must be addressed as soon as possible to avoid further accumulation of debt.
“To the debt in the sector, it is something that must be dealt with as soon as possible because, until we are able to fix the inefficiencies, the revenue leakages, particularly at the ECG, this debt will keep on increasing,” he noted.
Mr. Amoasi further stated that if these debts remain uncleared, they will force the government to step in and rescue the situation.
He also added that the economy itself is in a dire situation, and adding the energy sector’s debt to that of the state would place an additional burden on the economy.
He reiterated that a strategic measure must be devised to address the challenge, expressing confidence that the government has taken bold steps to resolve the impending issues.
“And so the debt must be managed. For now, I can say yes! There is a new leader in town, but yet to be tested practically on the job,” he concluded.
