President John Dramani Mahama has voiced concerns over the growing threat of terrorism in neighbouring countries.
During a meeting with Mali’s Prime Minister, General Abdoulaye Maiga, he highlighted the increasing dangers posed by extremist groups in the region and emphasised the urgent need for stronger regional collaboration to address the menace.
In his remarks, President Mahama assured Prime Minister Maiga of Ghana’s unwavering support for Mali and other nations in their efforts to combat terrorism and restore stability.
He underscored the importance of maintaining security as a priority for the region.
“Our security is an echelon objective, and we must work with each other to ensure that our sub-region is safe. Ghana continues to remain strong in solidarity with Mali,” he stated.
The President also reflected on the geopolitical challenges affecting the Sahel region, describing the ongoing insurgencies and terrorist activities as an increasingly grave situation. “It is not anything that is new, but it continues to become more severe than it was in the past,” he remarked.
He called for joint efforts to address these security challenges and strengthen regional stability.
In a bid to enhance bilateral relations, President Mahama announced the formation of joint technical teams between Ghana and Mali.
These teams are tasked with identifying and addressing existing challenges in their cooperation.
The initiative is expected to foster closer ties and develop sustainable solutions to shared issues in both countries.
Mali’s Prime Minister, General Abdoulaye Maiga, expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting its potential to bolster economic and security cooperation between the two nations.
“We’re convinced that our two leaders have the way to ensure cooperation in economic matters and security,” he said, reaffirming Mali’s commitment to strengthening ties with Ghana.
