Professor Kofi Abotsi, the Dean of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) School of Law, has stated that the constitution mandates presidents to present the actual State Of the Nation (SONA), rather than offering projections.
He explained that, over the years, presidents have used the opportunity to outline their future plans as head of state, focusing on projections instead of addressing the country's actual state as required by law.
"The constitution expects that the state of the nation supposed to be the state of the nation address, not a projection," he said.
He added, "Very often we had situations where presidents have used the platform to actually project what they intend to do moving into the future”.
Professor Abotsi was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, 27 February, ahead of President John Mahama’s first State of the Nation address.
The president, who assumed office in January this year, is set to present an assessment of the country's current state before the legislature.
Many citizens are hopeful that the president will address the state of the nation he inherited and outline plans for initiatives that will ultimately benefit the masses.
