Dr Kabiru Tia-Mahama, Member of Parliament for Walewale and a member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, says suspension is “the least” punishment President John Mahama can hand out to the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi.
He made these remarks during an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, 12 May, while discussing the controversy surrounding a viral video involving Mr Gyamfi.
In recent days, Sammy Gyamfi has faced intense public scrutiny after a viral video surfaced showing him handing out dollar notes to controversial fetish priestess turned preacher, Nana Agradaa.
The footage has sparked criticism both within and outside the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with some party members demanding disciplinary action against him. The gesture, many believe, undermines the party’s stance on accountability and code of conduct launched by President Mahama.
Commenting on the issue, Dr Kabiru Mahama said the seriousness of the situation warrants a firm response from the party leadership.
“I think that’s the least that can happen to him,” he stated. “I think it’s the least considering the gravity of what he has done.”
His remarks suggest that anything short of a suspension could be viewed as a weak response to conduct deemed unbecoming of a top public official.
Dr Mahama added that the NDC, as a party preparing for national leadership, must be seen to uphold discipline and integrity at all levels.
While calls for stronger sanctions have also emerged from some party grassroots, the Walewale MP believes that suspending Mr Gyamfi would send a strong enough signal that such conduct is unacceptable.
The party is yet to release an official statement on the matter.
