A 43-year-old barber, James Opoku—popularly known as Nana Yaw—was discovered dead inside his 'container' barbershop at Time Enterprise, located in New Site within the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality, on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
The tragic discovery was made after his wife, Christina Mensah, became worried when several calls to her husband went unanswered that morning.
In response, Christina sent their son, Shadrach, to the shop to check on his father and to collect pocket money.
Upon arrival, Shadrach found the entrance locked from within.
Despite knocking persistently and calling his father, there was no response. He was eventually found lying unresponsive near the door.

“There were signs of a struggle,” Shadrach told Connect FM in Takoradi. “He appeared to have crawled some distance from his mattress towards the entrance.” His account has prompted suspicions about the circumstances surrounding the death, though no official cause has been established yet.
Christina revealed that her husband had recently been sleeping in the shop at night to deter thieves.
“He’s been sleeping here for a while. Thieves have broken into the shop several times, so he decided to stay inside at night,” she explained.
When asked if Opoku had shown signs of illness, she said, “He was healthy and full of life… I don’t know what took his life.”
