Ghana’s midfield star Thomas Partey will officially leave Arsenal today, June 30, 2025, following the expiration of his contract with the English Premier League side.
Arsenal are expected to formally confirm his exit early this week, per The Athletic, bringing an end to his five-year spell at the North London club.
The former Tema Youth player was engaged in talks with Arsenal to possibly extend his stay, but both parties failed to reach an agreement on new contract terms.
Although signs in recent weeks pointed towards his imminent departure, the final decision has now been made, according to The Athletic.
Partey, who turns 32 this year, played an integral role in Mikel Arteta’s squad during the 2024-25 season, featuring in 52 matches across all competitions.
Despite injury concerns that plagued parts of his Arsenal journey, the Ghanaian midfielder proved to be a dependable figure when called upon.
Reports earlier this year indicated that Arsenal were keen to freshen their midfield options. The club is believed to have completed a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, with the transfer expected to be finalised in July.
Arsenal are also reported to be close to reaching an agreement with Brentford’s Christian Norgaard, further strengthening the position Partey occupied.
Partey’s departure marks the end of an era for the Black Stars vice-captain at the Emirates Stadium. He joined Arsenal in October 2020 from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid after the Gunners activated his €50 million release clause. Since then, he has made 167 appearances for Arsenal and scored nine goals.
Before his move to England, Partey developed through the ranks at Atletico Madrid, where he made 188 appearances and netted 16 goals. He enjoyed success in Spain, winning the UEFA Europa League in 2018 and finishing as a Champions League runner-up in 2016.
Partey’s exit follows that of fellow midfielder Jorginho, who also left Arsenal this summer to join Brazilian side Flamengo ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Media reports in Spain suggest he's been considered by La Liga Champions Barcelona to bolster Hansi Flick's midfield.
