The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has confirmed that the government has set a final deadline for the rollout of 5G infrastructure by the Next-Generation Infrastructure Company (NGIC), following delays in meeting earlier commitments.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, July 3, Mr George revealed that NGIC, Ghana’s exclusive neutral shared infrastructure provider for 4G and 5G services, had failed to meet its previously stated target of activating over 350 5G cell sites by June 2025.
“In my last briefing, I indicated that they had set a deadline of June 2025. Unfortunately, the company has been unable to meet that timeline,” the Minister stated.
“We have now set a final deadline of Q4 2025, by which time at least 50 live 5G sites are expected to be operational in Accra and Kumasi,” he added.
According to the Minister, as of July 3, 2025, NGIC had deployed 16 5G-ready sites and secured full approval from the National Communications Authority (NCA) for its core network infrastructure—progress Mr George described as “meaningful” following earlier setbacks in 2024.
Despite these advances, the government is taking a firm stance on any further delays.
“We have agreed with NGIC that there will be no further extensions to this rollout deadline. Should the company fail to meet the Q4 deadline, the Ministry will immediately initiate a review and possible renegotiation of the licence terms,” he warned.
The Minister confirmed that the NCA has been fully mandated to enforce this directive, ensuring compliance and holding NGIC accountable for delivering on its obligations.
