The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has called on the Government of Ghana to provide a full and transparent explanation for its decision to abstain from the UN vote on the LGBTQ+ mandate.
In a statement released on July 15, CDM argued that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must reveal what consultations led to the abstention and clarify the government’s official position on the matter.
The group also urged Parliament, particularly the NDC Majority, to move beyond “political posturing” and take clear action.
“We demand the immediate prioritisation and passage of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, in line with public expectation and parliamentary consensus,” CDM stated.
Reiterating their stance, CDM said they do not support violence or discrimination against any group, including LGBTQ+ persons.
However, they insisted that “upholding human dignity is not the same as surrendering cultural sovereignty,” and warned against allowing international bodies to define Ghana’s moral path.
“Our sovereignty is not for sale; and our silence must never be mistaken for consent,” the statement concluded. CDM called on traditional authorities, religious leaders, and civil society to increase their advocacy to ensure Ghana’s values are defended both locally and globally.
