Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Faustina Elipklim Akurugu, has presented 210 desks to the Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service in the Ga East Municipality to be distributed to schools.
According to Ms. Akurugu, who presented the pieces of furniture on Wednesday, August 27, the initiative sought to address not only the practical needs for seating but also symbolized a commitment to education, equality, and community development in Accra.
The desks would be distributed to selected public schools in the Ga East District.
Speaking to the media after the presentation, Ms. Akurugu highlighted the importance of investing in quality education, adding that the support formed part of the government's efforts to enhance quality education and promote effective learning.
“Every child deserves the chance to learn in comfort and dignity. By providing these desks, we are helping to shape a brighter future for thousands of pupils in Accra,” she said.
She mentioned that her office was undertaking numerous interventions to improve the learning environment, enhance academic performance, address overcrowding, support inclusivity, boost students' morale as well, and promote equality in the education sector.
Some of these interventions, she said, include the construction and rehabilitation of school buildings, the donation of learning materials, as well as the organisation of quiz competitions, among other essential campaigns.
The MP used the opportunity to urge teachers to maintain the desks and report any damage to the Assembly for repairs to help keep them in good shape.
The District Director of Education, Eric Sey, who received the donation on behalf of the Education Directorate, expressed gratitude for the MP’s commitment to improving education in the city.
“These desks will help ease the difficulties students face with seating and provide a more comfortable environment that supports their academic success,” he said.
Some staff and teachers in an interview welcomed the gesture with open arms, as they anticipate the positive impact of improved infrastructure on the quality of education in Accra.
The school desks, constructed from durable and locally sourced materials, were specifically designed to meet the needs of the students in the Municipality.
