Eight men who took part in violent disturbances during the Ablekuma North by-election have been convicted and sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court.
Each convict was ordered to pay a fine of 500 penalty units (GH¢6,000) or, in default, serve 24 months in prison.
The convicts, Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (alias Bomba), appeared before His Honour Isaac Addo on Friday, August 29, 2025, where they all pleaded guilty to the charges.
Prosecutors told the court that the incident occurred at the Methodist Church Polling Station during the by-election. The victims were Hawa Mavis Koomson, former Minister of State and ex-MP for Awutu Senya East; Majeed Mohammed Saana, a trader; and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
While the victims were monitoring proceedings, the accused persons allegedly launched an unprovoked attack, first assaulting Mrs Koomson and Mr Saana before turning on Mr Kwei.
Videos of the assault went viral online.
They were charged with conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The case, which began on Monday, August 26, was fast-tracked after all eight men admitted their roles in the violence, leading to their conviction and sentencing.
