A group of suspended staff of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has petitioned the company’s Acting Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu, appealing for their urgent recall to duty posts after nearly eight months of suspension without pay.

In a petition dated September 8, 2025, the group recounted how they went through a rigorous recruitment process that included aptitude tests, interviews, medicals, and orientation before receiving appointment letters in November 2024. They were subsequently posted to duty stations across the country, only to be suspended on February 11, 2025, without salaries.

According to the petitioners, the suspension has left many of them destitute, with some unable to pay rent, cover children’s school fees, or afford medical care. Others, they said, had resigned from stable jobs to take up the GWL appointment and are now burdened with debts.

Quoting Section 62(2) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), the group argued that suspension without remuneration is unlawful unless otherwise specified in the employment contract.

“Our suspension, without pay, violates this statutory protection and has stripped us of our dignity as workers and as human beings,” a portion of the petition read.

They also raised concerns that new appointments have allegedly been made to replace them, describing the move as “unfair and demoralising.”

They urged management to “consider the human face of this situation” and recall them to their duty posts, insisting they remain committed and ready to serve.

"Sir, in the spirit of fairness, compassion, and justice, we humbly appeal to your kind leadership to urgently recall us to our duty posts and restore our entitlements. We are eager, willing, and ready to work diligently and contribute to the vision and mission of Ghana Water Limited.

"We trust that your fatherly heart and sense of justice will not allow this matter to linger any further. May your timely intervention restore hope not only to us but also to our families who depend on us,” they stressed.

The group earlier mounted a protest at the Black Star Square on Wednesday, 9 September 2025, demanding reinstatement without delay.

The aggrieved workers, holding placards bearing messages such as “Mr President, intervene, we are all Ghanaians,”

“May Allah speak to your heart, Mr MD,” and “Mr MD and GWL Board, call us back to work,” appealed to both government and the management to heed their plight.

They also sang patriotic songs to amplify their call for justice.
