At least one person is dead and nine others are injured after a shooting and a fire at a Mormon church in Michigan, local police say.
Officials said the suspect drove his vehicle into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, a town 60 miles (96 km) northwest of Detroit, on Sunday morning and opened fire.
They added that the suspect, a 40-year-old male, "deliberately" set the church on fire. The fire has since been contained, but officials said they fear they will find additional victims when it is safe to enter the building.
The alleged shooter was killed by police, the Grand Blanc Township Police Department said, adding there was no further threat to the public.
Officers said the nine injured suffered gunshot wounds and are in stable condition in hospital.
The suspect in the shooting was not named. Investigators said they are looking for a motive and are conducting a search of the man's property and his cell-phone records.
Grand Blanc police added that 100 FBI agents have been deployed to assist with the investigation.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed in a statement that federal agents are assisting local authorities. He called the incident "a cowardly and criminal act".
US Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on X that she had received briefings on "what appears to be a horrific shooting and fire" at the church.
"Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling," Bondi said. "Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy."
In a separate statement, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said, "Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable," adding that she was monitoring the situation.
