Deputy Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr Dramani Bukari, has cautioned against politicising the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on Prime Morning News Flash, Dr Bukari stressed that Ghana can only win the war on illegal mining if all stakeholders act beyond political lines.
“To win the fight against illegal mining, we must intentionally avoid politicising actions taken by strategic stakeholders. Once politics comes in, people find excuses to justify their actions, and we lose the opportunity to deal with the issue,” he said.
Referring to the Akonta Mining controversy, he noted that the key question should not be about political affiliations but about legality.
"Whether Chairman Wontumi is an NPP Chairman or not, the fact remains, did he engage in illegal mining or not? Does he have the required licenses? Did he operate appropriately? These are the questions that must be asked,” he emphasised.
Dr Bukari added that government decisions on such matters should be based on facts rather than political influence, saying the issue has only gained wide attention “perhaps because of who he is.”
