The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has dismissed claims that it is refusing to cooperate with the Attorney-General in efforts to extradite former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana to face criminal charges.
The OSP had earlier placed him on a wanted list and issued an Interpol Red Notice over his alleged involvement in ongoing corruption investigations.
Despite multiple agreements, Mr. Ofori-Atta has reportedly failed to return to the country.
In January 2025, the OSP identified him as a suspect in a number of corruption-related cases, including alleged irregularities in contracts with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), expenditures related to the National Cathedral project, and issues in health and tax refund operations.
He was first declared a “fugitive from justice” in February 2025 after failing to honour repeated summonses by the OSP.
Subsequently, his lawyers requested that his name be removed from the wanted list, promising he would return.
In June 2025, after he again failed to appear before the OSP on the agreed date, his fugitive status was reinstated and the OSP indicated it would proceed with extradition steps and an Interpol Red Notice.
However, 10 months since his first declaration, Ken Ofori-Atta has neither been arrested in the US, nor has he voluntarily returned with recent reports claiming the OSP was not assisting the AG’s office in the effort to extradite him to Ghana.
But sources close to the OSP say the matter is receiving the needed attention.
