The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Yohuno Tetteh, has revealed that at least 70 police officers will be deployed to each polling centre across the country for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming flagbearer election on 31st January.
He said, "We are assuring you that, at least seventy is the least number of police men that will be at each polling station."
With 333 polling stations nationwide and an estimated 211,000 delegates expected to participate, a total of 23,310 police officers will ensure security during the exercise.
"All senior officers are going to be at the polling stations. We will have the inner deployment, the middle deployment and then the outer deployment. The outer deployment is heavily loaded," he added.
The IGP said this during the signing of the peace pact by all five candidates contesting for the party’s leadership on Thursday, 22nd January, in Accra.
The IGP reiterated that the deployment is part of efforts to guarantee a peaceful and orderly election, with additional military support requested for the Bawku enclave due to local tensions.
He added that military support would be required in the Bawku enclave due to ongoing local tensions.
"We have gone through all the preparations, over and over again, and we are ready to go to the field except for Bawku. That is the area that we may need the support of the military, and so we have written to the Interior Minister to inform the Minister of Defence so that we have military support in Bawku," he said.
