The National Rental Assistance Scheme has expanded, with the number of beneficiaries increasing to 4,732 and total funds reaching GH¢71.7 million, the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Agyei has said.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday [January 28, 2026], the minister said the scheme's growth followed increases in available funds and enrolment over the past two years.
Mr Agyei said the scheme started with seed funding of GH¢27 million and has grown through the rollover of principal and interest.
He said this growth allowed the government to support more tenants and over time, the principal and interest rolled over and accrued to a total of GH¢71.7 million.
He said through the administration of the scheme, beneficiary numbers increased from 2,701 in 2024 to 4,732 in 2025. The scheme is ongoing,” he said.
He explained that the scheme was designed to assist low-income tenants who face difficulty paying rent, particularly in urban areas where accommodation costs continue to rise. He said the increase in beneficiary numbers reflected wider access to the support provided under the scheme.
Mr Agyei said the government was holding discussions with other financial institutions to extend the scheme to additional regions.
He said the intention was to allow tenants across all 16 regions to benefit in the coming years
