The Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC) has ordered the immediate closure of Royal Nursing College in Tafo Nyhiaeso, Ashanti Region, citing the institution’s failure to provide documentation verifying its accreditation.
GTEC stated that the college does not hold accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council and had ignored a previous directive issued in June 2024, which prohibited the admission of new students.
The college, reportedly enrolling over 800 students, has been operating without proper registration, raising serious concerns about programme management and the quality of education being offered.
According to Accra-based Citi News, GTEC officials visited the campus on Thursday, February 19, and after an inspection lasting about an hour, announced the closure.
The Council emphasized that the measure was necessary to protect students and enforce national education standards.
Plans are being made to transfer affected students to accredited institutions, with special arrangements expected for final-year students to complete their programmes.
The closure left many students distraught, with some reportedly in tears on campus. Several expressed frustration, noting that they had recently paid tuition fees only to face an abrupt disruption to their studies.
During the enforcement visit, the Criminal Investigation Department accompanied GTEC officials, taking into custody the wife of the school’s owner and certain members of the college’s management team.
