The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has declared that the Ashanti Region can no longer be considered the exclusive stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following the NDC’s improved performance in the 2024 general election.

Addressing the chiefs and people, as well as party supporters at Nsuta Kwamang Beposo on Wednesday as part of his three-day Ashanti Regional “Thank You Tour,” the NDC chairman said the party’s electoral gains in the region signaled a major political shift.

He explained that historically, the NDC had struggled to make significant inroads in the Ashanti Region, with campaign activities largely confined to a few constituencies.

However, the party took a deliberate decision ahead of the 2024 elections to intensify its presence across all districts in the region.

According to him, the strategy paid off, as the NDC expanded its reach and significantly increased its vote share.

From a long-standing benchmark where securing about 28 percent of the vote in the region was considered sufficient for national victory, the party exceeded expectations by pushing its performance beyond 30 percent and approaching 35 percent.

The parliamentary outcome also reflected the party’s progress. Whereas the NDC had previously secured between three and four seats in the region, it emerged from the 2024 polls with eight seats—its best showing to date in Ashanti.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia noted that the results demonstrated growing acceptance of the NDC within Asanteman and underscored the region’s importance in determining national electoral outcomes.

He stressed that no political party could win power in Ghana without making significant gains in the Ashanti Region, given its size and influence.

He added that the NDC’s renewed engagement with the region would be sustained, likening the party’s relationship with Ashanti voters to a long-term commitment that requires continuous attention and presence.

The chairman also acknowledged the role played by traditional leaders and religious groups, noting that their prayers, counsel, and support contributed to the party’s success.
